Company History

Calter & Company, Inc., a family owned and operated business, began in 1982 when Walt Clifton, who worked for Toledo Scale for many years was given the opportunity to purchase Toledo Scale’s Delmarva business territory as a distributor. Walt operated under the name of Tideland Scale in sales and service of scales in retail (deli, grocery, seafood, etc) and industrial (truck scales, feed mills, etc) with his son Greg. In an effort to concentrate the operations of the business, the industrial segment was sold in 2000. The purchaser also acquired the name “Tideland Scale.” Calter & Company Inc. was created by Greg to better service grocery stores and food establishments on the growing Delmarva Peninsula (eastern shore of MD and VA, lower DE). Greg's brother Steve who joined Tideland in 1993 now owns and operates Calter along with his wife Mary. Steve and Mary purchased the business in 2006. In 2012 the focus of Calter is on the grocery industry providing prompt and quality service to our customers.
